Households & Whānau

emergency preparedness

supporting household & Whānau emergency preparedness

It’s important that you ensure your family and whānau is ready for the unexpected. Disasters can strike without warning, and being prepared can make all the difference in protecting your loved ones and property and getting through the critical first 72 hours.

In Aotearoa, households are encouraged to be prepared to sustain themselves for at least seven days following a disaster. This recommendation stems from the understanding that in the aftermath of significant emergencies, such as Cyclone Gabrielle, essential services such as electricity, water, and communication networks may be disrupted, and external assistance could be delayed.

Key Recommendations for Household Preparedness:

  1. Emergency Supplies: Ensure you have sufficient food, water, medications, and other essential items to last each household member for a minimum of seven days. This includes considering the needs of pets and individuals with specific dietary or medical requirements.

  2. Communication Plan: Develop a plan outlining how family members will contact each other and where to meet if separated during an emergency. This is crucial, as traditional communication channels may be unreliable.

  3. Stay-at-Home Kits: Have kits containing resources and supplies that enables you to survive and stay self-sufficient at home for 3 to 7 days after an emergency.

  4. Emergency Kits: Have grab or evacuation bag containing necessities such as first aid supplies, important documents, clothing, and personal hygiene items. These should be easily accessible in case of sudden evacuation.

  5. Stay Informed: Familiarise yourself with local emergency procedures and stay updated through reliable sources.
