community preparedness trust

The Community Preparedness Trust helps communities and whānau across Aotearoa to strengthen emergency preparedness and community resilience.

Community preparedness trust

why the trust exists

Emergencies and disasters do not affect everyone equally and often disproportionately impact our most vulnerable communities and whānau.

We understand that emergency preparedness varies significantly across regions and within regions. While urban areas may have more resources, rural communities often lack even basic infrastructure, leaving some populations at heightened risks. Additionally, limited resources and support for lower-income communities intensify the impacts of disasters, exacerbating inequities.   Families and whānau living in poverty may also struggle to afford basic emergency preparedness supplies, while rural and remote communities often face significant delays in receiving critical support and aid following an event

These disparities create a cycle of vulnerability, where those communities most affected by disasters become the least able to prepare and recover from them.

purpose

The Community Preparedness Trust was set up to support communities in emergency preparedness and resilience. The Trust can provide to support communities including those that have or may be disproportionally affected by disasters and climate change events.

The Trust can:

  • provide or arrange to provide infrastructure, capabilities, equipment and resources to vulnerable communities across NZ;
  • assist communities and related organisations to obtain additional funding for such resources;
  • engage with communities and organisations to implement systems that improve resilience, readiness, response and recovery outcomes;
  • create an ecosystem of key partners and stakeholders that represent communities to better understand and manage their own risks; and
  • provide training and education to improve readiness, resilience, response and recovery outcomes.

positive impact

The Trust’s focus is to not take a one-size-fits-all approach to building emergency preparedness within communities. Instead, the focus is to work closely with local community leaders, Iwi and other stakeholders to implement effective strategies that are right for each community. The Trust ensures that all activities have a meaningful and lasting positive impact for and within communities that it serves.

Through collaborative partnerships, we aim to not only address any immediate needs and risks but also create a foundation of resilience that supports communities to not only survive but thrive.

support us

Our Trust  relies on collective effort and strong partnerships with a variety of different stakeholders including civil defence and emergency management, councils, communities, Iwi, funders, non-for-profit organisations, corporate sponsors and individuals that are willing to contribute to make a difference. The benefits are wide reaching:

  • For Communities: Where our support helps communities have access to resources, training and support to strengthen emergency preparedness and resilience.
  • For New Zealand: Where each resilient community benefits everyone, creating stronger networks and reducing the overall impact of emergencies on society.
  • For You: Where there is an opportunity for you to be part of meaningful change, ensuring that no one is left behind when disasters strike.

support us

The Trust is always looking for new communities and partners to support our cause. Disasters are inevitable, but their impact doesn’t have to be. Together, we can empower our most vulnerable and prepare communities to face future challenges with confidence and resilience.
