Hon Mark Mitchell (Minister for Emergency Management and Recovery) and Katie Nimon MP (Napier) Visit
In 2024, we had the pleasure of welcoming Hon Mark Mitchell and Katie Nimon MP to our FIRST72 Headquarters in Hawke’s Bay to see the 7 EPODs that were being deployed to Wairoa. We showcased the importance of community-led preparedness and how the EPODs are supporting communities to build resilience through self-sufficiency.
During their visit, we also discussed the upcoming changes to New Zealand’s emergency management system and the recent rollout of EPODs throughout the South Island in partnership with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu. Katie Nimon, having worked on the front lines during Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023, understood firsthand how pivotal EPODs can be in disaster response and recovery efforts.
“A few weeks ago I went and visited Harry and the team at EPOD, a local organisation here in Napier creating resilience solutions. EPODs provide a critical lifeline that community can use in a disaster, emergency and climate change event. As always, we are so impressed with ideas stemming from people in our communities – who see a need and jump on it.” – Katie Nimon MP.
Our conversation also highlighted the vulnerability of Hawke’s Bay and the East Coast. With the Hikurangi subduction zone just offshore, these areas are particularly at risk for a large-scale catastrophic earthquake and tsunami event. We emphasised the importance of strategic planning and community preparedness to mitigate these risks and enhance resilience.
Minister Mark Mitchell and MP Katie Nimon’s visit reaffirmed the importance of our mission at FIRST72.
Thank you, Minister Mark and Katie, for your time and your ongoing support!
