FIRST72 Milestone: 22 EPODs Deployed Across the South Island
We are incredibly proud to announce the successful completion of our project, in partnership with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, to deploy 22 Emergency Pods (EPODs) across the South Island, Te Waipounamu. In just three months, all EPODs have been strategically placed at Marae sites throughout the region, marking a monumental step in enhancing the emergency preparedness and resilience of our communities.
Te Waipounamu faces a significant risk of an Alpine Fault rupture, with a 75% probability of such an event occurring within the next 50 years. The potential for catastrophic outcomes, including widespread isolation and damaged infrastructure, underscores the critical need for robust emergency preparedness measures.
The partnership between FIRST72, Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and Te Puni Kōkiri has been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition. The placement of these EPODs on Marae ensures that these vital community hubs are equipped to provide essential support during an emergency, continuing their legacy as local response centres.
The rapid and efficient deployment of these EPODs reflects the dedication and commitment of everyone involved. It is a testament to what can be achieved when communities and organizations work together towards a common goal—safeguarding our people and ensuring that we are prepared for whatever the future may hold.
This project is not just about the deployment of equipment; it’s about empowering our communities to be resilient in the face of adversity. With the EPODs in place, we have strengthened our ability to respond to emergencies, ensuring that our whānau and communities are supported when they need it most.
As we celebrate this milestone, we also look to the future, continuing our mission to enhance our emergency preparedness & resilience. Our team at FIRST72 express the deepest gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the success of this project. Your dedication has made a significant impact, and together, we have taken a crucial step toward a more resilient future for all.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our work to build resilience and prepare!
