Communities are always the first to respond in any major emergency. But too often, they don't have the resources, equipment or support they need to do so safely and effectively.
The Community Preparedness Trust (CPT) exists to change that by working alongside communities across Aotearoa to strengthen disaster preparedness and resilience.
The CPT is a registered charity established in late 2023, in the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle.
It was set up to do something the emergency management system had been struggling with for years – directly support the communities, marae, hubs and volunteer groups doing the mahi on the ground.
The CPT focuses on the people and places most likely to be disproportionately affected by major events including rural and isolated communities, flood-prone communities, high-risk areas, Māori and Pasifika communities, marae, iwi, hapū, community hubs, community response teams, schools and not-for-profits.
With financial and in-kind support from a growing network of partners across Aotearoa, the CPT enables community-led initiatives that build real, measurable resilience including training, resourcing, resilient infrastructure, disaster relief and community response capability.
The CPT operates across all 4 R’s of emergency management: Reduction, Readiness, Response and Recovery.
FIRST72 is a founding and lead delivery partner of the CPT (among others).
FIRST72 provides the operational support including emergency expertise, project delivery and on-the-ground capability that enables the CPT to deliver real resilience outcomes for communities.
When the CPT supports a community to become better prepared, FIRST72 makes sure every dollar invested by the CPT translates into something tangible for the communities it serves.
We also contribute pro-bono time, in-kind support and discounted equipment to help the CPT stretch its scope further.
This partnership means CPT can focus on what it does best – connecting funders, partners and communities behind a shared mission.
At the heart of the CPT’s direction is Ready Together – a shared commitment to prepare 500 communities across Aotearoa by 2030, to a nationally consistent minimum standard of preparedness.
The CPT is governed by an independent board that meets monthly to review progress, approve projects, and guide the mission forward.
It’s backed by a growing network of partners across Aotearoa with support from funders, private businesses, philanthropists, central and local government and individuals who share the belief that stronger communities make for a safer New Zealand.
Whether you’re looking to support the cause, make a difference in your community, or seek support for a local initiative – the CPT would love to hear from you.
Together, we can make sure no community is left behind.
