Hawkes Bay Project – Building Community Resilience
Hawkes Bay is particularly susceptible to a range of natural disasters, as highlighted by Cyclone Gabrielle. However, an even greater threat looms in the form of the Hikurangi Subduction Zone. Scientific assessments indicate a 25% chance of an 8.0 magnitude earthquake striking the region within the next 50 years. Such an event could trigger a catastrophic tsunami along the east coast, with Hawkes Bay bearing the brunt of its devastating impact (see modelling below).
In response to these significant risks and supported requested by communities across the region, we have supported a FIRST72 Hawkes Bay Project which proposes to implement over 25 SMART EPODs throughout the region within the most vulnerable communities. These EPODs will not only be equipped with essential supplies to support communities during the critical initial phase of an emergency but will also feature advanced connectivity. By adopting a ‘hub and spoke’ model, these SMART EPODs will be able to communicate with each other, creating a resilient network that enhances community preparedness and response capabilities across Hawkes Bay (see below image). All EPODs will be able to integrate within CDEM systems and through D4H to create a common operating platform. We are in advanced discussions about deploying several EPODs up Napier Hill in support with a recently established Community Emergency Hub.
This project is made possible through collaboration with local authorities and key stakeholders. The SMART EPODs will be strategically positioned to ensure maximum coverage and accessibility, providing a robust safety net for all residents.
Together, we can build a Hawkes Bay that stands strong in the face of natural disasters, ensuring the safety and well-being of all its residents.
