Hawkes Bay Project – Building Resilience Against Natural Disasters
At FIRST72, we are unwavering in our mission to enhance community resilience in the face of emergencies. Today, we are excited to announce the launch of the ‘Hawkes Bay Project,’ a vital initiative aimed at fortifying disaster preparedness in one of New Zealand’s most vulnerable regions.
Hawkes Bay is particularly susceptible to a range of natural disasters, as tragically highlighted by Cyclone Gabrielle. However, an even greater threat looms in the form of the Hikurangi Subduction Zone. Scientific assessments indicate a 25% chance of an 8.0 magnitude earthquake striking the region within the next 50 years. Such an event could trigger a catastrophic tsunami along the east coast, with Hawkes Bay bearing the brunt of its devastating impact (see modelling below).
In response to these significant risks, the Hawkes Bay Project proposes the deployment of over 25 SMART EPODs throughout the region. These EPODs will not only be equipped with essential supplies to support communities during the critical initial phase of an emergency but will also feature advanced connectivity. By adopting a ‘hub and spoke’ model, these SMART EPODs will be able to communicate with each other, creating a resilient network that enhances community preparedness and response capabilities across Hawkes Bay (see below image).
This ambitious project is made possible through collaboration with local authorities and key stakeholders. The SMART EPODs will be strategically positioned to ensure maximum coverage and accessibility, providing a robust safety net for all residents.
At FIRST72, we understand the critical importance of proactive disaster management planning. The Hawkes Bay Project exemplifies our commitment to creating resilient communities capable of facing any challenge with confidence and strength. We are proud to partner with the Hawkes Bay community in this vital endeavor, paving the way for a safer, more prepared future.
Together, we can build a Hawkes Bay that stands strong in the face of natural disasters, ensuring the safety and well-being of all its residents.
