Regional & Local Councils

There are not enough resources in our emergency management system to individually support everyone.

building community preparedness & resilience

Communities need to rely on themselves as the first line of response.

Following Cyclone Gabrielle, many communities have a strong desire to build their own preparedness and resilience capabilities.

Regional and local councils (including CDEM) should lean into and support this important work to ensure plans are as effective as possible.

In some remote communities, these plans need   to include back up electricity and communications systems for situations where infrastructure damage means communities need to   rely on their own resources for extended periods of time.

Not all communities will have the resources and capacity to lead readiness work or afford individual preparedness supplies.

There needs to be coordinated, funded preparedness initiatives to ensure people who cannot afford to build up emergency food and water supplies, and people who are displaced from their homes, are appropriately supported in an emergency.

You can help support that.

EPOD benefits

Safeguard whānau

EPODs are designed to protect and safeguard lives during natural disasters and emergencies.

reduce harm

Have access to critical and immediate support when you need it most, helping reduce unnecessary harm &  impact.

empower communities

Be completely self-sufficient and resilient  through emergencies and disasters with the safety & security of an EPOD.

survive & thrive

Rely on an EPOD to help your community get through the FIRST72, accelerate  your recovery, and build back stronger.

The FIRST72 hours are critical

Emergencies can happen anywhere, at anytime - often without warning.

In a major disaster, emergency services will be overwhelmed, and it might take several days before help arrives.

Communities need to be self-sufficient and prepared to survive on your own. This means having enough resources and supplies to last the first 72 hours and having a plan for shelter, food, water, and medical needs.
